Reuben students involved in Beyond Boundaries art competition

Two of our DPhil students, Morgan Mitchell (Clinical Neurosciences) and Zhiyao Luo (Engineering Science), have been selected as researchers for this year’s ‘Beyond Boundaries’ art competition.

The ‘Beyond Boundaries’ competition is a University of Oxford project, founded in 2018, which aims to increase the visibility of Oxford’s Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic scientists and mathematicians, by bridging the perceived divide between science and art. It also aims to connect schools and local communities with the University, with school pupils in years 5-8 being invited to create art inspired by the research of six BAME students.

Morgan and Zhiyao are two of this year’s scientists from across the University, to present their research in order for it to be captured as artistic pieces. Morgan’s research aims to investigate ways of improving rehabilitation for stroke survivors, and explores Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR); while Zhiyao’s research focuses on AI solutions to make treatment recommendations for COPD and sepsis patients.

The following entries, based on the research of our students were chosen as winners by the judges:

Morgan Mitchell:

  • Year 6 VC Commendation – ‘Movement in the Music’
  • Year 8 winner – ‘Connection’

Zhiyao Luo:

  • Year 6 runner-up - ‘Zhiyao Luo: Interactive Lego Head’
  • Year 7 runner-up – ‘The side effects of AI’
  • Year 8 runner-up – ‘Coexistence’

There will be an exhibition of selected artwork from the competition at the Museum of Natural History between Friday 30 June – Monday 3 July, to showcase to the public the breaking down of the art, science and people boundaries.
